(There is a sex scene in this series, which is portrayed in a way consistent with the characters still, to my tastes, it would have been a stronger story had this scene been left out). Once he does, he acts responsibly and with care for Chihiro.
Yamada, following the BL formula of “going gay for you,” has had a strong of female lovers, and so is slow to realize his attraction to Chihiro. Chihiro is shown to have taken on adult responsibilities early in life after the death of his father, yet at the same time is still very much an older teen in some of his behaviors. While the BL fetish for adult-teen love stories is trying, some are handled better than others.* This manga handles it by following the characters’ everyday lives and emotions, giving each time to grow and develop. Yamada and the Boy is a sweet, charming story of how Yamada, an HVAC repairman, does a good deed that leads him to a new place in life with high school senior Chiharo. Sometimes the quiet stories are the good ones.
